Makeover or renovation
If the layout works and the cabinets are sound, a kitchen makeover may be enough. If you need more storage, an island or a scullery, choose a full renovation.
Timing

Older homes
Homes built or renovated before about 1990 are checked for asbestos before demolition. Older switchboards may need upgrading for induction.

Internal work is usually exempt, structural work may need approval, and townhouses and apartments need owners corporation approval.

Questions people ask before they commit
What does a kitchen renovation cost in the Hills District?
As a 2026 guide: makeover $14,000–$24,000, replacement $24,000–$38,000, custom with island $38,000–$60,000, showpiece with butler's pantry $60,000–$110,000 or more.
How long are we without a kitchen?
Typically three to five weeks on site, because cabinetry is made before demolition.
Can we have engineered stone?
No. Engineered stone has been banned in Australia since 1 July 2024. Porcelain, natural stone, solid surface, timber and laminate are the main alternatives.
Do we need council approval?
Internal kitchen renovations are generally exempt development unless structure changes. Load-bearing walls need engineering and may need approval. Strata properties need owners corporation consent.
What deposit is allowed in NSW?
The maximum deposit is 10 per cent. For work over $20,000, home building compensation cover must be in place before a deposit is requested.
